1 class period that runs 45 minutes.
Students will measure wind speed, air pressure, humidity, temperature, and wind direction. They will compare their observations with those of the media.
Thermometer; Barometer; hygrometer; Compass; Beaufort handout; Daily newspaper or Internt access.;
Background For Teachers:
Since this activity extends over several days, it would be appropriate to take the measurements in the same spot (and about the same time) each day.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students measure temperature,humidity, air pressure, and wind speed and direction. They compare their observations with those of the media.
Take the students to the Internet addresses in step 3 of the lesson (Of open the daily newspaper to the weather section) and show the students where the media reports their measurements. Go to the pond site (or outside your classroom since wind direction should be meaningless inside) and make an observation regarding the sky (clear, overcast, partly cloudy etc.). Record any precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, hail , or none). Using the hygrometer measure the humidity level. Using the barometer measure the air pressure. Using the thermometer measure the temperature. Using the compass, record the wind direction. Using the Beufort scale estimate wind speed. Look up the same measurements you made in step 2 which are made by the media. Use any of the Internet Links listed to find the media measurements
